Most often is it that website owners normally start off using the shared web hosting platform and their site begins to grow and demanding more resources and functionality, they are left with no option other than to upgrade to a more powerful hosting option. Since they are leaving a shared hosting platform they are always faced to choose from either virtual private server (VPS) hosting or its counterpart the dedicated hosting.

A VPS hosting just lies in between the shared and dedicated hosting. The shared hosting involves sharing of the same physical server with several other clients of the hosting company i.e. it can be likened to a situation where residents (website) of a building, share resources of that particular building say toilet/kitchen/water/ (a single physical server). The resources are not unique to a particular person; everybody has an equal right to access the resources at any given time. For the dedicated hosting, the entire server is reserved and only made for you. There is no pooling of resources to share with other owners; the server is just dedicated to you.
The VPS hosting is just sitting in between shared and dedicated. Several other websites will be hosted on the same server as yours’s but your own domain website is uniquely configured to your own particular virtual compartment of having your own operating system, Central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), bandwidth.
The VPS operates using a parent server (a powerful server) to host a wide range of virtual servers separately from each other using hypervisor software. The host fixes a virtual layer on top of the operating system which enables it to partition the virtual servers enabling the different users to install their own software customized for their privacy from other users on the same operating system (OS) level.
Been in-between the shared and dedicated hosting, VPS has several benefits it commands as it combines the features of the other two hostings. Its benefits include the following:
VPS hosting in terms of cost when compared to its counterpart, the dedicated hosting, it seems that is quite fair. Comparing it with the shared hosting you will realize that it is quite expensive. There is also this problem of inappropriate allocation of resources in the VPS hosting. This becomes a problem when there is a sharp sudden spike in which a particular reaches its peak levels. This usually occurs as a result of a shortage of space sold by the web host which will, in turn, affect all other sites on the server. Though to checkmate this, close monitoring of the virtual accounts online at the same time in the server should be implemented.
Back to the big question, VPS Hosting: Does it worth it? My answer is a big YES. Imagine a hosting that can behave like a dedicated and shared hosting at the same. Using it places me better than anybody using shared hosting that will be faced with problems of traffics and slows processing of my commands and at the same time, saving me from the expensive dedicated hosting which still has its own complication of needing a physical rebooting by a website expert. With my VPS I can scale up or upgrade my server virtually without stress or needing a physical computer that I will still hire and pay.
